Screening and Discussion of Listening to the Land

Bishop’s University

Celia Haig-Brown of York University—with the participation of Professor Avril Aiken of Bishop’s University, Curtis Tootoosis (former principal of Jimmy Sandy Memorial School) and others connected to the Naskapis of Kawawachikamach—made an exceptional documentary called Listening to the Land at Bishop’s University in March 2019. After a generous presentation of the film, a number of members of the community, including Chief Swappie, were on hand to discuss the making of the film and the importance of the various issues that the film explored including the preservation of the Naskapi language, their culture and traditions and the changing relationship to the land.
